Maximum productivity with 5-axis CNC machines

Looking back to the beginning, DMG MORI owes its leadership in the global 5-axis market to its universal milling machines. In both 5-sided milling and simultaneous 5-axis machining, the premier class of milling, different series, from basic models to high-tech machines, cover the entire spectrum of high-performance milling technology. Equally impressive are the accuracy of less than 15 µm in space and the diversity of the component spectrum. The portfolio offers travel paths of up to 6,000 mm and enables the machining of workpieces weighing up to 40 tonnes. Whether aerospace, automotive or tool and mould making, DMG MORI’s wide range of 5-axis CNC machines addresses those users who need to master the biggest machining challenges on a daily basis.

Complete machining with additional process integration

As only the sixth side may need to be finalised with a second clamping set-up, 5-axis CNC machines are crucial when it comes to efficiency in the complete CNC machining of complex parts. Even more complex workpieces can be machined with the integration of a rotary milling table. This is because turning makes it possible to integrate further process steps in one and the same workspace. Complex gearing or high-precision grinding operations considerably expand the range of applications for machining centres, while drastically reducing throughput times. Conventional manufacturing sequences that require three or more machines and several clamping set-ups are combined on a simultaneous 5-axis milling machine.

5-axis millling: the most important things to know, in brief

What is 5-axis milling?

What is 5-axis milling?

In 5-axis milling, a workpiece is machined from five sides, meaning that the re-clamping processes required for 3-axis milling are largely eliminated. Only the sixth side may need to be finalised in a second step.

What are the five axes in milling?

What are the five axes in milling?

In contrast to 3-axis milling machines, which machine components along the X, Y and Z axes, 5-axis CNC machines also have two additional rotary axes. They can be used to position the workpiece in any conceivable position in relation to the tool.

What is simultaneous 5-axis milling?

What is simultaneous 5-axis milling?

With simultaneous 5-axis machining, all the axes are interpolated, which gives the milling machine the best possible machining versatility. The kinematics of the CNC machine are usually housed in a swivelling rotary table, which continuously moves the component while the milling tool removes material. An alternative is head kinematics. Simultaneous 5-axis milling enables the production of free-form surfaces, which are common in mould construction, for example.

The right 5-axis CNC milling machines for every application

With a total of ten series, DMG MORI offers suitable 5-axis CNC machines for almost every application. While the CMX U series is the cost-effective entry point to 5-sided machining, the compact DMU models open the door to the simultaneous 5-axis milling of components weighing up to 300 kg. The extremely stable design of the NMV series sets standards in 5-axis precision machining, while the HSC 20 linear spindle speeds of up to 60,000 rpm produce perfect surfaces down to Ra < 0.1 µm. An acceleration of 2 g makes the process unbeatably dynamic. The DMU eVo, DMU monoBLOCK and DMU duoBLOCK machines are among the classics in DMG MORI’s 5-axis range. The latter two series also offer DMC models with a pallet changer to enable set-up to take place in parallel to production time. DMG MORI covers the simultaneous 5-axis machining of larger components with the travelling column machines of the DMF series, the DMU gantry models and the portal machines.

Needs-based equipment for a wide range of applications

In addition to productivity and process flexibility, the key arguments in favour of 5-axis milling include high cutting performance and maximum precision. DMG MORI fulfils these application-specific requirements with a modular system. This means that the 5-axis CNC milling machines can be equipped with task-optimised spindles as required. Whether they are milling aluminium, stainless steels or titanium alloys, customers can always find an optimum production solution for both precision and heavy-duty machining – including, on request, integrated automation solutions for the optimum utilisation of machine capacities.
